There are neerly 250 doctors passed out from De Mazenod College during the past 80 years of school history, including neerly 45 specialist consultants in various specialties. Among them Dr. Shamintha Amaratunga (VS/ Eye surgeon) was world famous for his amazing record on conducting 200 surgeries during 12 hour period of time. At present Mazenodian doctors are providing medical services to motherland dispersing all around the country and some are currently living in foreign countries as well. As old Mazenodians doctors, we all believe this is the right time to express our gratitude to Alma mata.
In 1996 Dr. Daya Fernendo, Dr Anne Saparamadu and Sydney Jayasuriya got together and established the De Mazenod Collage medical center. Which declared opened by Dr Jayalath Jayawardena. which was the first major initiative which united the doctors working in the hospitals in Gampaha district. In year 2000 fully equipped dental clinic also started and it declared opened by Dr Vipula Saparamadu.
One day in 2005, couple of doctors at north Colombo teaching hospital (NCTH), Ragama got together and discussed to establish a legal body for Doctors to reunite them and to uplift the health status of the students and the teaching staff. They were success only to have a single meeting at NCTH but unfortunately they couldn’t proceeded it further. But they all had this idea on their mind to establish a doctors association in next couple of years.
In 2011 Dr. Daya Fernendo,Dr Sujeewa Perera, Dr Sunimal Jayakody and Dr Sydeny Perera got an excellent opportunity to get hold to Dr. Shamintha Amaratunga (VS/ Eye surgeon ) to establish the Old Mazenodian Doctors Associations (OMDA). The first OMDA meeting was held 14th July 2011 Poya Day at Kanayan Reception hall Kapuwatta Ja-Ela. Dr. Shamintha was selected as the president of the OMDA and Dr. Vipula Saparamadu as the secretary and the Dr. Sydney Perera as the Treasurer of the OMDA. Other selected committee members are Dr Nilanga Perera, Dr Daya Fernando,Dr Sujeewa Rodrigo,Dr (Mrs) Dayangani Rajapaksha,Dr Dileepa Ediriweera and Dr Diluk Pinto . Thease office bearers are responsible for conducting the OMDA for the next one year.
Now OMDA is a pioneer professional association of De Mazenod College providing medical, education and financial assistant to the present students of De Mazenod College and medical, dental students of local universities.
Ongoing projects
- To give scholarships to students who are selected to follow medicine or dental degree
- To do free health screening for teaching staff and students.
- To develop a pool of counselors among teachers to identify and help the students with learning difficulties
- Continuous drugs, equipments and skill providing to the school medical center.
- Improve educational and social relationships among members
